Miniature Overture (10 tubas and optional percussion) (Programme Notes: The Nutcracker ballet, written in 1892, was the last of Tchaikowskys 3 great dance pieces for the theatre. Although it is considered the least significant score it contains some of his most popular music. It is delightfully tuneful and colourfully orchestrated. The ballet itself was not initially succesful but the Suite which Tchaikowsky soon made was received well. This overture is the opening item of the suite and though it contains no bass instruments in the original orchestration, lends itself well to this tongue in cheek transcription for tuba choir. Performance notes: The percussion parts are optional but preferable. Play very lightly and with pointed rhythm. Try to ensure that in all dynamics the articulation is precise but not at all aggressive. Be particularly careful when playing in the upper register that the volume is under control and does not become forced. All parts may be doubled as required but ensure that lightness of articulation and style are maintained. This arrangement was made for a recording of music for tuba on behalf of the John Fletcher Trust Fund and all proceeds from sale of the music will go to the fund. _____________________________________________________________________ The John Fletcher Trust Fund was created in the memory of the great tuba virtuosos who died prematurely in 1987. Friends and colleagues from all over the world contributed to set up a fund with the aim of providing bursaries for impecunious young brass players. The Fund has supported young people attending courses run by The National Youth Orchestra, whose profound influence on the musical development of young players was a cause very dear to Johns heart. The Fund has also supported young brass players in the National Youth Wind Orchestra and the National Youth Brass Band.
