Vánon (414.01) (Neuheit Ensemble) Vanon was written in 2007 following a commission by trumpeter, conductor and teacher James Watson for a concert with the brass department of the Royal Academy of Music. The concert commentated the 20th anniversary of the passing of tuba and brass legend John Fletcher or ‘Fletch’, as he was known. As such, many of the fragments of the melodic material draw on ideas of pieces associated with the Fletcher himself while there is also a moment of solemn reflection in the middle of the work. The majority of the piece is vibrant, virtuosic and full of character as befitted the many tales I heard of the trailblazer that was/is ‘Fletch’.
