Verses Verses for Bass Trombone was written in 2014 for Jonathan Warburton who played in the Birmingham Schools’ Wind Orchestra which Colin Touchin conducted in the early 1990’s. Now established in the USA Jon asked for a new challenging piece for some workshop performances in conservatory masterclasses. The form of the piece is indicated by the title – a series of sections each based on similar pitch sequences, but with different moods, tempi, dynamics, and registers. As such it would be possible to add more sections in future, if Jon asks for even more complexity! As it is, the work aims to demonstrate the instrument’s lyricism alongside its fluency and flexibility.
