2 Pieces by Bach (Adagio from Sonata I for Violin and Clavier - Gavotte en Rondeau from Partita III for Solo Violin) (J.S. Bach wrote 2 sets of 6 suites for the violin. One is for unaccompanied violin, 3 Sonatas and 3 Partitas, and the other for violin and clavier. The Adagio in this set is adapted from the Sonata in B minor, No.1 for Violin and Clavier and the Gavotte en Rondeau is arranged, with an added keyboard part from the Partita No.3 in E major for solo violin. Performance notes: Adagio: this should be played expressively but with taste and style. Play the moving quavers cantabile and with a gentle sense of rhythmic motion. The mordent decoration should feel as if it is part of the melodic line and should not become ugly by being over emphasised. Gavotte en Rondeau: play this in a light style throughout. Chose a tempo that allows controlled articulation and fluent movement without undue haste or panic. Some decorations are written in on the reprises of the Rondo theme; they may be omitted or amended according to individual taste.)
