Elégie (Neuheit Posaune) This Elegy was composed in 2024 for its composers Master of Performance recital at the Conservatoire National de Lyon. Its composition pursued two objectives. The first, of a compositional nature, was to blend the stylistic codes of late nineteenth-century French romance with those of a more modern impressionism. The second, more technical and practical, was to create a work suitable for the end of a recital programme: a piece that would be challenging to perform while not being physically exhausting for the instrumentalist. This short musical work requires great flexibility from the trombonist, a strong musical connection between the two performers, careful attention to phrasing, and a refined exploration of tonal colour through dynamics. Ultimately, the lightness of impressionism should prevail over expressionist pathos.
