Bitter And The Sweet (Clarinet, Trumpet, Piano & Percussion) (Neuheit Trompete) THE BITTER AND THE SWEET was commissioned by the chamber ensemble Pastiche, which also recorded the work. Conceived as both a Rondo and a Theme and Variations, the composition draws its inspiration from Klezmer, the traditional Jewish folk and celebration music of Eastern Europe. The three-measure theme that opens the piece returns throughout the work as a recurring signal, announcing the arrival of each new major section. While every section introduces its own character, all are connected through the continued development of melodic, rhythmic, and motivic material derived from earlier passages, presented within constantly evolving harmonic frameworks.
